| Dr. Brian Matlaga is Assistant Professor of Urology
at The Brady Urological Institute and the Director of Stone Disease at
Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Matlaga came to Johns Hopkins
after completing a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and metabolic
stone disease. During his fellowship he was designated an American Foundation
for Urologic Disease Research Scholar, and was awarded the Outstanding
Research Scholar honor in recognition of his work involving the treatment
of patients with stone disease.
More recently, his work to define the pathophysiology of calcium oxalate
stone disease won the Best Overall Paper Award at the 24th Annual World
Congress of Endourology.
Dr. Matlaga’s main clinical interest is the minimally invasive
treatment of patients with metabolic stone disease, including percutaneous
nephrolithotomy, ureteroscopy, and shock wave lithotripsy. In addition,
Dr. Matlaga has an interest in the holmium laser enucleation of the prostate
(HoLEP), a minimally invasive laser therapy for men with benign prostatic
enlargement.
As the Director of Stone Disease, Dr. Matlaga is actively engaged in
clinical and basic science research addressing the questions of: Which
patients develop stones? How do stones form? How well are we treating
patients with stones?
