BRADY NEWSIt is with great excitement that I announce the successful recruitment of Robert H. Getzenberg, PhD as the new Research Director of the Brady Urological Institute. Dr. Getzenberg will succeed our present Director, Donald S. Coffey, PhD, who will be stepping down after serving as Research Director for over forty outstanding years. Dr. Coffey’s legendary accomplishments and impressive pedigree of investigators whom he has trained have been one of the driving forces behind what has made the Brady what it is today. Dr. Getzenberg and his family (spouse - Emily and children Rachel and Alaina) are planning to move to Baltimore in January, 2005 when he will assume his new position. I hope you will join me in welcoming Robert and Emily - I know it will prove to be an exciting time. Alan W. Partin, MD, PhD
Dr. Getzenberg’s widely published research in prostate and bladder cancer has garnered numerous grants from a variety of agencies and foundations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research focuses on cancer detection and understanding cancers develop and progress at the molecular level. Dr. Getzenberg's laboratory has recently developed a highly accurate biomarker to identify bladder cancer, which is now being tested in a national trial. His laboratory is also studying the role of Vitamin D in normal and abnormal prostate growth, and is investigating a potential biomarker for colon cancer. Dr. Getzenberg completed a fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine, his doctoral work with Dr. Coffey here at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine - Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and his undergraduate degree at Rutgers University. Dr. Getzenberg has made extensive contributions to the scientific literature through published journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He is a member of many professional organizations including the Society for Basic Urologic Research, American Association for Cancer Research, the American Urological Association and serves as the Basic Science Editor for UROLOGY. Currently, Dr. Getzenberg’s research is funded by multiple grants from the NIH, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Department of Defense and other organizations. He has received Young Investigator awards from the Society for Basic Urologic Research and National Kidney Cancer Association; the Shannon Award from NCI; and the Swebilius Cancer Research Award from Yale University.
